| What does the D4Science e-Infrastructure offer? |
| |
By operating the gCube software, the D4Science e-Infrastructure offers to its user communities coordinated and secure sharing of computing and storage resources, as well as software tools, services and data repositories. It allows specific scientific research groups inside the user communities cost-effective, scalable and highly-configurable set up of multi-disciplinary Virtual Research Environments (VREs) for the generation and dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge.
The D4Science e-Infrastructure interfaces and uses the computational and storage capabilities offered by the grid operated by the EGEE project (www.eu-egee.org). In this way, it delivers a data infrastructure for the generation, curation, representation, and management of large data sets.

SUMMARY
| |
| Success Stories |
| The gCube software is installed in an e-Infrastructure operated by the D4Science project, and its successor the D4Science-II project. The D4Science e-Infrastructure builds upon the EGEE gLite-based grid and is powered by the gCube system. |

| |
| Who uses the D4Science e-Infrastructure? |
The communities that take advantage of the D4Science e-Infrastructure are the scientific communities affiliated with the broad disciplines of Environmental Monitoring and Fishery and Aquaculture Resources Management users, such us environmentalists, earth scientists, foresters, fisheries and livestock specialists, nutritionists, social scientists, statisticians, agronomists, economists, and others.

| What’s next? |
| New communities of users will soon bring new clients to the D4Science e-Infrastructure. In fact, two additional VREs are currently being designed to interface the e-Infrastructure with existing systems. |
| |
| |
| How do they use the resources of the e-Infrastructure? |
| To serve the needs of the user communities, five scenarios are currently implemented in five distinct Virtual Research Environments operated in the D4Science e-Infrastructure. |
| |
| |
| What is the D4Science project? |
| The D4Science project (www.d4science.eu) is a research project co-funded by the European Union 7th Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7). The FP7 Research Infrastructures work programme aims at fostering the emergence of a new computing research environment in which virtual research communities share and exploit the collective power of the European landscape of scientific and engineering facilities. |
